Editorial: Doctor Doom Will Be A Blogger In New Fantastic Four Film, And That's OK....For Now

While a fantastic trailer of Avengers: Age of Ultron has put that film on everyone's radar, the other two superhero movies for Summer 2015 have been flying a bit more under the radar so far. One of them, Ant-Man, has at least unveiled official photos from the production and some behind-the-scenes footage, while the other, The Fantastic Four, has given us zip, zilch, nada aside from a photo of a stand-in for the movies version of The Thing.
The film has been covered in secrecy, with the only thing being known about it is that it'll be grounded, realistic, words being used so much to describe the project it's become monotonous. Some official information has crept through the cracks though, with Toby Kebbell (who gave a fantastic performance this summer as Koba in Dawn of The Planet of The Apes) giving some concrete information on his character in the film, Doctor Doom. Instead of being called Victor Von Doom, he'll be known as Victor Domashev, and he's a programmer of sorts, who blogs under the name Doom.

This could go either way in my book. If they play it right, Victor could be an Edward Snowden like character using him living in Latveria as a way to gain immunity from America, and continuing his blogging activism. He loves the power his activism gives him, but when the Fantastic Four pop up with powers never before seen on our planet, he decides to regain his dominance on the planet by putting on a suit and mask and becoming a bad guy for the ages. That could be alright.

On the other hand, the way Kebbell describes him as an "anti-social programmer" makes me worry we're in for another Max Dillon, "nerdy" type of character, which sounds far more trite. With no footage or photos at our disposal, it's harder to get a grasp on the project. The cast for this movie is great, and I enjoyed the last movie from Josh Trank (whose directing this reboot), Chronicle. Here's to hoping this ends up going somewhat alright.
