Thursday Night Grosses For Ted 2 Make It Unlikely For It To Be Bigger Than Predecessor

I thought my $62 million opening weekend prediction for Ted 2 was generous when I wrote up my box office predictions yesterday, and it turns out, I was right. Ted 2 made $2.6 million last night from Thursday night grosses, about on par with the original Ted which also made $2.6 million, though that movie made that cash at Midnight screenings instead of the earlier showings Ted 2 had. A more pat comparison would be 22 Jump Street, a comedy sequel released last year that had much earlier showtimes and made $5.5 million, more than double the grosses of Ted 2.
If Seth Macfarlanes newest movie followed the same path as 22 Jump Street for the weekend, it would make $27 million for its opening frame. Ted 2 will make waaaaaay more than that, but it feels all but assured at this point that it's gonna have a lower opening weekend than the first Ted. It's also a crapshoot at this point if it can make more than Inside Out and Jurassic World for the weekend, so who knows whose gonna win this weekend when the dust settles.

Max, meanwhile, also played at Thursday night screenings and made $500 thousand. There's not a ton of box office comparisons for the movie, but if it plays like last weekends family movie Inside Out, which made $3.6 million on Thursday night before making $90 million for the overall weekend (Joy and her fellow emotions did have Tuesday night screenings factored into its Thursday night grosses), then it would make about $12.5 million for the weekend. It'll likely go a smidge higher than that, and my opening weekend prediction of $14 million could end up being dead-on.
